There's a lot to be said in favor of building your own engine. You have ultimate control over every detail, and you can customize the engine your way. You decide on the specifications, which machining operations are performed, and what parts are used. If money is an issue, you can build it incrementally, when you have the cash. And when the finished product performs well, there's nothing like the feeling of pride that comes from saying ""I built it myself"".

But engine building is not without its pitfalls. It can be very time consuming: Few of us have the requisite skills or equipment to do the entire job, so you're at the mercy of the machine shop's schedule, plus you have to hunt down all the necessary parts. If you don't spec your engine wisely, you can end up with performance that doesn't meet your expectations, and if it's not machined and assembled properly, it will probably have a very short lifespan.

In contrast, you can have a complete performance engine assembly, commonly known as a ""crate motor"", delivered to your door, ready to install, in a matter of days. You can pick up the phone and order one week, install the engine over the weekend, and be out cruising or racing the following week. There are performance engines for every desired level of power output and application. The parts selection, machining operations, and assembly are performed by professionals with many years of experience. They know the parts combinations that make reliable, dyno-proven horsepower, and each engine usually comes with a warranty.

You also have many more options when going with a performance engine assembly than you do with rebuilding your existing engine. More displacement is often the easiest path to more power, but you may not be able to significantly enlarge the bore and stroke of your present block. Performance engine assemblies are available with over 20% more cubic inches, but with the same physical exterior size for easy fitment. Or you can completely repower your ride with a modern engine without having to search for all the individual parts - we have the engines and offer the parts and adapters for all of the most popular engine swaps.

Your choice of performance engine assemblies includes everything from short blocks to complete powertrain systems. A short block is an engine block assembled with crank, rods and pistons. A long block is typically a short block with cylinder heads, and ""tin"" - the valve covers, oil pan and timing cover. In a complete engine assembly the long block comes with intake manifold, fuel and ignition components, harmonic balancer, and may include engine accessories. And for the most complete, turnkey set-up for your project, choose a performance engine and transmission combo that also includes the ECM, sensors, and wiring harness.
