A properly setup carburetor can enable an engine to make just as much maximum horsepower as an Electronic Fuel Injection system, but when it comes to drivability it's no contest - EFI wins hands down. Making the most horsepower is great at the drag strip or for bragging rights, but is it worth it when it comes with balky low temperature starting, rough idle and stalling when cold, and the continual need to make carburetor adjustments to stay in tune in ever changing temperatures and humidity levels?
With EFI you get it all - maximum power with easy starting and consistent idle at all temperatures, and once it's set up, no more adjustments are necessary because EFI automatically adjusts the air/fuel mixture to suit operating conditions. Along with better performance, EFI is also more engine friendly too - no fouled plugs or poor mileage from an overly rich mixture, or burned valves and detonation from a lean mixture that can easily occur with a carburetor, which has no self-adjustment capabilities.
If you've considered an EFI conversion but have been hesitant because of the cost and complexity, consider this: While the up-front cost is substantial, it will be offset in the long run by fuel savings and the fact that less of your valuable time will need to be spent under the hood fiddling with a carburetor. And despite what you may have heard, these kits are easy to install! Each kit comes with detailed installation instructions, and many include everything needed from fuel pump to injectors. No tuning experience is necessary: Initial set-up is performed via a proprietary hand-held device or with a cell phone app, and the system will literally tune itself as you drive.
TBI (Throttle Body Injection) kits are the simplest to install and most affordable. The fuel injectors are incorporated into the throttle body, which is generally designed to fit manifolds with a standard square bore carburetor mounting flange. These can be mounted in place of both single and dual carb applications and are a good choice when you want to preserve original appearance because in most cases they accept the original air cleaner. Base kits exclude the fuel delivery system while complete kits come with an in-tank or externally mounted fuel pump, filters, and lines. TBI systems are available to support engines making up to 1200 horsepower.
MFI (Multiport Fuel Injection) systems are the most sophisticated EFI conversions. Like most modern OE EFI vehicles the injectors are mounted in the intake manifold runners for more efficient fuel distribution. Systems including a manifold are application specific, but there are also universal kits that include injector bungs so you can convert your existing manifold. Like TBI conversion systems, MFI kits are available with or without fuel delivery systems. Some TBI and MFI conversion systems also include electronic ignition timing control for select distributors or crank triggers, and facilitate control of power adders like nitrous oxide, and we have units that are both gasoline and E85 compatible.
