Motor Mounts
Like their original equipment counterparts, the primary function of performance motor mounts is to locate and support the engine and driveline in the chassis. But that's where the similarity ends. Factory motor mounts must also dampen the noise and vibration of normal engine operation for driving comfort, but the softness and flexibility that is necessary to achieve this is counter to what is needed for a performance or racing vehicle.
OE motor mounts are generally made of soft rubber, and many newer vehicles have fluid-filled hydraulic mounts. These materials are fine for isolating the cabin, but they can allow too much lash in the driveline. When you mash the gas pedal, the engine and driveline can twist in the soft mounts. Torque that twists the engine and driveline in their mounts is wasted power - power that could be put to better use at the drive wheels.
In addition to wasting power, soft OE motor mounts can have some other adverse effects. Soft flexible rubber mounts can allow driveline movement to the point that it causes wheel hop and traction loss on some vehicles. Rubber mounts are prone to split and fail from age, and exposure to heat and fluids like oil. When this occurs, the engine and driveline can become misaligned, which can cause clutch, shifter, and throttle linkage binding, and possible component damage. It's obvious that for performance applications, firmer, more durable motor mounts are needed.
We offer polyurethane motor mounts for all popular vehicles that are much firmer than OE mounts, and much tougher. These durable mounts are impervious to heat, oil, coolant and road salt. Depending on the vehicle, you may experience increased vibration with these mounts. But if performance is your goal, you'll get more power to the ground with no wheel hop, plus improved throttle response, because your engine and driveline will be held firmly in place. And on some vehicles you may even experience an overall increase in vehicle rigidity, which can improve handling as well.
If you're racing and need the ultimate in stiffness, we also offer solid steel motor mounts for many applications. We also have other motor mount products including shims to adjust engine height, universal mounts that are perfect for mounting many popular engines in projects like street rods, and mounts designed specifically for engine swaps. Our engine swap mounts have been engineered to allow the installation of many popular powerplants into different chassis, making it easy to repower a classic with a modern engine or upgrade a horsepower challenged driveline with V8 power.
